SEO vs AI Search Optimisation: What’s the Difference?

SEO and AI search optimisation are related, but they are not the same.

Traditional SEO helps webpages rank in search results and attract relevant visits. AI search optimisation looks at whether a business or its content can be understood, cited, mentioned or recommended within AI-generated answers.

For HOM, they belong in the same search strategy. SEO focuses on discoverability and rankings, while AI search optimisation adds visibility inside generated answers, citations and recommendations.

What Traditional SEO Is Designed to Do

SEO helps search engines discover, understand and rank content through technical SEO, search intent, internal linking, site structure and authority.

Someone searching Google for “commercial builder Brisbane” may find a company because its commercial construction page clearly explains its services, locations and project experience. The optimisation target is often a particular page: can Google understand it, rank it for the right searches and encourage the right person to click?

HOM still monitors rankings, organic traffic, enquiries and conversions as key SEO measures.

What AI Search Optimisation Adds

AI search optimisation extends that work into experiences where an answer may be generated before the customer reaches a website.

Instead of searching “commercial builder Brisbane”, someone might ask ChatGPT or Perplexity: “Which Brisbane commercial builders have experience delivering industrial warehouses and large commercial projects?”. The platform may compare businesses, summarise experience, cite sources or recommend options.

An AI answer may combine information from your service page, case studies, reviews and external websites rather than present one webpage as the result. Visibility becomes less about holding one position and more about being accurately represented within the answer.

SEO vs AI Search Optimisation

  Traditional SEO  AI Search Optimisation
Main goal  Help webpages rank for relevant searches and attract qualified website visits  Help a business or its content be understood, cited, mentioned or recommended
How people search  Often shorter keyword or question-based searches  Often longer, conversational and more specific questions
Where visibility appears  Organic listings and other search-result features  AI-generated answers, citations, comparisons and recommendations
What gets surfaced  Usually a webpage that ranks for the search  Information may be drawn from parts of a page and combined with other sources
Role of the website visit  The website click is usually an important part of the journey  A customer may assess the business before ever visiting the website
External signals  Backlinks and established authority signals are important  Links still matter, alongside reviews, brand mentions and consistent information across other sources
Measurement  Rankings, impressions, traffic, conversions and enquiries  Mentions, citations, representation, AI referral traffic and resulting enquiries

Where SEO and AI Search Optimisation Overlap

Businesses do not need two disconnected search strategies.  Strong SEO foundations give search engines and AI systems clearer information to work with. Service pages, logical site structure, useful content and accurate business information can support both.

Ranking well does not guarantee inclusion in an AI answer. AI search also increases the importance of consistent business information, evidence of expertise and independent sources that support it.

For HOM, SEO builds the discoverable foundation. AI search optimisation broadens our focus to how the business is understood and represented elsewhere.

How HOM Is Bringing the Two Together

Alongside rankings, traffic and conversions, we review how clients appear across AI-assisted search.

We test realistic customer questions in ChatGPT and Perplexity rather than treating one prompt as a ranking. Answers can change with the wording, so we look for patterns across searches.

We review how the business is described, which competitors appear and which sources are cited. If a competitor is consistently associated with a service or expertise and our client is not, we investigate the gap. It may sit in a service page, case studies, reviews, external mentions or information that lacks specificity.

We also monitor AI referral traffic in GA4 to connect visibility with website visits and enquiries.

Do You Need SEO or AI Search Optimisation?

For most businesses, the answer is both.

SEO continues to support discovery, rankings, traffic and enquiries. AI search optimisation extends that work into representation, citation and recommendation visibility. HOM’s focus is to bring the two together around how customers actually search, then adapt as that behaviour changes.
